"Call me Diana, not Princess Diana." When and why did Diana say this?
I see the quote on a number of websites "Call me Diana, not Princess Diana" but without a date or explanation.
Although it looks like a statement of humility, in reality she may have been correcting people as to the proper royal style. it is not proper style to call her "Princess Diana" because she is not a Princess in her own right, but only by her marriage to Prince Charles. her proper styles while married would be the choide of:
(1) "her Royal Highness Princess Charles"
(2) "her Royal Highness, Diana, Princess of Wales"
The choice (1) is seen by most people as being kind of old fashioned. A common wife can be called "Mrs. William Smith", but most women no longer use this form of adress.
After her divorce, she was no longer royal, so the HRH was dropped. She was referred to as:
Diana, Princess of Wales.
"Princess Diana" is incorrect style, but was frequently used in the media. I actually think that Diana said this quote early in her marriage, in an effort to educate the media, but most people mistook it for an act humility.
Supposedly, Diana, the Princess of Wales, graciously said this "to hospital patients and on charity visits on many occasions" perhaps as a way to give her correct title after her divorce became final on August 28, 1996 (http://castingjulia.com/princessdiana.ht… ). upon her divorce, Lady Diana Spencer lost the style her Royal Highness and instead was styled "Diana, Princess of Wales.
The Internet contains a lot of references to this quotation, but not one of them that I could find attributed it to any exact date.
she would often say this to hospital patients and others. Just a way of comforting them I suppose.
So the date is unknown…. I suppose from her first hospital visit to her last.
I would guess 1995-96 because she and Prince Charles divorced, and she was no longer a princess.
What are you implying, Wanka?
