Remember Snakes on a Plane? the first thing that springs to mind when you hear Cowboys & Aliens is that this must be a barefaced sequel – the aftermath of a meeting of sozzled execs challenging each other to come up with the name that would flog the most box-office tickets. either that or it’s a nugget of 24-carat genius with which they wanted to catch us unawares. the truth is that Cowboys & Aliens strikes somewhere in between.

Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) is a cowboy who can’t remember a darn thing. Waking up in the desert with a chunky metallic bracelet encasing his arm, he ambles into the nearby town of Absolution and tasks himself with finding out what’s going on and who he is. Doubling up the craggy-faced fun, Harrison Ford plays the wonderfully named Woodrow Dolarhyde, a mean-spirited old bastard who wants Lonergan’s blood for the theft of his gold (of course, Lonergan can’t remember stealing it at this moment in time).

It doesn’t take long for the sci-fi contingent to make an appearance, and when they do, it’s hardly a fair gunfight; the aliens unleash hell with lasers blazing, raze Absolution to the ground and abduct half of the townsfolk (their means of seizure is something of a letdown; sort of futuristic rope ladders as opposed to beams).

However iffy the title might be, Cowboys & Aliens is acted with more gravitas than you’d anticipate. Craig for one makes a fine cowboy. Were James Bond around in the Wild West, he’d be something akin to Lonergan – a smoldering loner with a stockpile of one-liners and a handy right hook. Heck, Lonergan even has the gadgets; that bracelet is exactly the kind of thing you’d expect to see 007 misusing to unzip a cocktail dress, although in fact it holds the secret to Lonergan’s amnesia.

Putting in his second sterling performance of recent films (see Morning Glory), Ford’s is a surprisingly composite character who shrugs off his initial dastardliness (using one of his lackeys as a Stretch Armstrong, tied between two horses), to reveal a soppy old sod who just wants to get his whimpering son (Paul Dano) back.

The two disparate men form a ragtag rescue party, which also comprises a whiskey-slugging priest (Clancy Brown), a small boy with growing bloodlust (Noah Ringer) and Olivia Wilde as a mystery woman. Considering she’s a gal alone in the Wild West, she’s treated with mighty fine respect by the men, and maybe that’s because it’s she who seems to have at least an inkling of what’s afoot.

Here’s the shocker then: Cowboys & Aliens works pretty well. Tracking down the otherworldly kidnappers (and by the way, these aliens are retro – all gooey claws, and Jason and the Argonauts style movement), the group discover a ship stranded in the middle of the desert ("I don’t know much about boats, but I would say that one’s upside down"), and clash with a settlement of Indians and a band of villains, before Lonergan’s memory is finally restored and everyone takes to the mountains to give them aliens what-for. as far as action and adventure’s concerned (and that’s exactly what this movie is concerned with), Cowboys & Aliens hits the spot on numerous occasions.

One question: what would Cowboys & Aliens have been if you took away the cowboys? Or the aliens for that matter? well, Humans & Aliens would be a painfully basic UFO abduction flick. And if you substituted the aliens for a gang of outlaws or wild Indians, you’d have yourself a familiar revenge Western – something like the Searchers or true Grit.

Off-the-wall as it sounds then, Cowboys & Aliens feeds off staple movie concepts, and it’s not so much the story that makes it or the ridiculousness of the premise, so much as the care taken writing the individual characters, and the straightness with which they’re played. that and some superb action.

Is Cowboys & Aliens stupid? of course; it’s called Cowboys & Aliens, for goodness’ sake. But its refusal to play any scene for laughs gives it a credibility that isn’t quite befitting of its throwaway title. with Craig and Harrison both in fine fettle and a roster of behind-the-scenes talent (including Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard in producer roles), this is certainly not one to dismiss altogether. although a sequel would be pushing it.

Film review: Cowboys & Aliens

SONOMA (CBS SF / AP) — People heading to downtown Santa Rosa Sunday morning will have a chance to witness a tradition usually associated with the Wild West.

A team of professional wranglers will be herding about 40 cattle through the streets of the city’s downtown to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The cattle, mostly Texas longhorns, are trained for cattle drives. They’ll be herded to the fairgrounds as part of a reenactment of the area’s history.

The cattle drive is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.

Officials are taking steps so that there’s no repeat of a cattle drive in Napa in 1994 that ended in a stampede. the Press Democrat says that ill-fated drive ended with several police cars being damaged.

For Sunday’s cattle drive, Santa Rosa police will be closing some downtown streets to traffic, while barricades will be in place to keep the cattle away from spectators.

Western Gun Holster – The Way of the Wild West

He was one of the best gunslingers in the Wild West who became famous after an article in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine described how he shot and killed three men who tried to kill him.  And way too often he got tested by other men who wanted to see just how good he was.  Time and again Wild Bill Hickok came out on top.

He was so good with a gun he was offered and accepted the position of sheriff of Abilene,  Texas.  but after accidentally killing a deputy, Hickok never fought another gun battle. He joined Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show demonstrating his shooting skills and worked as a hunting guide.

But it was on this day in 1876, with his back to the door, Wild Bill Hickok was shot and killed by a man who approached from behind while playing poker in a saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota.  The gunman tried to shoot others at the table, but all of the other bullets in his gun were duds.  The man was later hanged.

When he was shot, Hickok was holding a pair of black aces and a pair of black eights.  If you ever get that combination in a poker hand – it’s known as the Dead Man’s Hand.

A scene from the HBO Series “Deadwood” depicts the killing of Hickok with a slightly different interpretation of history.  Beware of some colorful language.

PVV’s Manager, Matthew Theall came out alone and reminded Drake that PVV was not at the APW Garage or even in the country. according to Theall, PVV was taking a much deserved vacation in Korea after costing Drake the championship.-Drake was furious and tries going after Theall, but Theall revealed that he had a restraining order against Dylan Drake and if Drake even laid one finger on Theall, then Drake would be arrested and sent to jail. Drake snatched the restraining order, read the facts, crumbled it up and threw it at Theall! Drake warned Theall that he and PVV better stay out of his business. Drake would also go on and say that the APW Universal Heavyweight Championship would be around his waist after he defeats JECKLES in the Main Event tonight!1) Sheik Khan Abadi defeated "The Unorthodox Jew" Levi Shapiro with the Shia Crescent!2) Shane "Wild" West and Mikey Jay defeated The Carnival of Shadows (OMEGA and CORVUS) with DARKNESS, when Mikey Jay pinned CORVUS following the Party Crasher!-Before the third match, Matthew Theall returned to the ring to announce that tonight, he has signed a NEW client to APW and he was going to dominate All Pro Wrestling.3) Damien Grundy with Matthew Theall defeated Brian Tyler following a crushing Powerbomb!-Matthew Theall once again got on the microphone and demanded the APW Fans to take notice that Damien Grundy was the new force to be reckoned with in APW. At the end of the 15 minutes, no man was able to defeat another, but left the fans jaw-dropped with their spectacular double team maneuvers, their high-risk skills and their passion to win. All three men proved they are serious competition to the Internet Champion!9) The Sons of Texas ("The Hangman" Dalton Frost and "Big Country" Jody Kristofferson) vs. The Darevko Brothers ("The Siberian Spirit" Sasha and "The Russian Wolf" Alexis) brawled to a Double Count-Out!-The Sons of Texas and the Russian Darevko Brothers clashed in the middle of the ring, but neither team was able to get the upper hand. “Get that snake off stage!” the director bellows, as Annie Oakley hangs upside-down on a ladder, shooting out six balloons in her signature, show-stopping, super star act.

“You bring him on after the trick is over!” Terry Sands corrects as a sheepish junior cowboy quickly retracts his performing python.

What on earth is going on is Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, opening in the charm of the Annisquam Village Hall, as the Village Players rustle up a big dose of the old West in “Annie Get Your Gun” through six shows, running Tuesday night through next Sunday.

Director Terry Sands and his producing theater partner Mary Curtis have assembled a vigorous cast of indians, cowboys and folks from our past: jugglers, wrestlers, cowboy clowns and sharpshooters.

This year’s show marks Sands’ 20th year as village theater mogul and he picked a classic. “Annie Get Your Gun” is no johnny-come-lately copycat musical. it was born in 1946 and featured belter Ethel Merman in the title role, singing classics “No Business like Show Business,” “Anything you can do I can do better,” and “Moonshine Lullaby” among other ear catching toons.

It is full of double-entendres, slapstick, sight gags and rollicking group numbers. it is an amazing collaboration between Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein who began the show, only to turn it over to Irving Berlin for the final version. The songs are pithy, direct, sassy and classic.

This year’s cast is a slightly different take on the AVP formula. usually, the emphasis is on the kids and the women to drive the shows, with lots of cute group scenes, dancing — and soft “awwww” moments, with elegant, young warblers supporting polite, earnest men in patient and measured performances.

This year’s show has all of the “awww” and the cute kiddie group scenes, songs and dancing alright, but there is a cadre of male theater vets who wrap around the core of the show like a belt — a belt of whisky, that is — driving the show’s energy level and comic pace straight in and out of songs and plot turns.

Strong male performers, strong singers and funnymen make the regular, softer fare even yummier as the gals rise right out of the heap of male energy and take the show to a rousing level.

Victoria Fortune is marvelous as Annie. Innocent but wise, sassy but shy, a crooner and a belter, Victoria is as cute and accomplished an Annie as you could ask for. She is comically matched by veteran Larry Cook whose completely down-to-earth, almost Jack Benny manner is a terrific counter point to all the impish actions of the upstart star shooter and her backwoods siblings. Cook’s fine baritone is made for the Berlin/Rogers score.

The plays principal men provide the foil for Cook’s lead, Frank Butler. The characters of Buffalo bill (Pharrel Wener), Charlie Davenport, (B.B.’s general manager — played by me), rival Pawnee bill (Dominic Parry), Tommy (David Cluett), hotel owner mr. Wilson (Michael English) and especially the show-stealing Keith McCarthy as the legendary chief Sitting Bull all careen, scheme and sing their way into a funny, effective frame for the show’s love bird couples.

All this strong male support makes Annie and her fellow gal leads, Dolly Tate (Deb Michels) and little sister Winnie (superb singer Ariel Sargent) rise out of the scrum as a welcome, reasonable, common sense point of view. But in the meantime. there’s plenty of shooting, kissing, guffawing, tumbling, dancing, show-stopping belting, juggling, clowning, yee-haw-ing, whip cracking, and basketfulls of puns, jokes and tricks. It’s a funny, strong show with a funny, strong cast.

Annisquam Village Players boasts one of the oldest theater traditions in the country, if not the oldest. This production is well worth the trip to one of Gloucester’s crown jewels.

You’ll exit humming songs you thought you’d forgotten and — who knows — maybe you’ll go home and shoot some cans off’a the back fence.

But you won’t stop humming that tune in your head while yer shootin,’ pard’ner.

Gordon Baird is a local actor and musician, co-founder of Musician magazine, host of “Gloucester Chicken Shack” cable TV show — and, yes, plays the role of Charlie Davenport in the Annisquam Village Players’ production of “Annie Get Your Gun.”

Because, I wish to put this myth to rest once and for all.

From many sources like, Wikipedia and History Channel's Wild West Tech
Outlaws like the Reno, Dalton, James, and Hole in the Wall gangs never did that when they robbed a train. Wiki says, " Contrary to the method romanticized by Hollywood, outlaws were never known to jump from horseback onto a moving train. Usually, they would either board the train and wait for a good time to initiate the heist, or they would stop or derail the train and then begin the holdup."

So with words like this would that method of train robbery ever happen cosidering that 3 or 4 passengers could be carrying concealed weapons?

Ride alongside the train, point a gun at the driver and order him to stop the train. Simple.
This "putting the myth to rest" seems to be a rather unhealthy obsession with you.

The actual family of the deceased try to edit the article to get rid of the errors
Wikipedia moderators reject the edit making the bizarre claim that "only one bio is needed". (It was only the one bio being edited.)
To this day, five years later, the inaccurate fan bio remains with the subject's own family's contribution rejected by "moderators"

To this day Hollywood has never {"Unstoppable" included} ,never NEVER , come close to accuracy in dealing with trains in movies . The few actually close to reality , are so few and far between that they are unknown to all , but those who love trains . so.Know this to be true -If you saw it in a movie, it's a deception! An exaggerated falsehood , A great fat lie.

Well I honestly think Train robbery was rare full stop….you would never know what you was stopping, to jump on a train from horse back is crazy, they wouldn't do it…would you?
Stage coaches were far safer and easier quarry and it happened as late as 20th century, there is even a photographic record on such an event in 1911 as in an unprecedented event Bandits allowed a photographer to record it with photos …here is one of the pictures, I can't find anymore but they exist.

Other than Dr. Gary Alt, there may be no one in the state who has been more actively involved with Pennsylvania’s black bear program than John Paul “Jack” Harris, Jr. who has documented his outdoors adventures and escapades in his recently published book, “Beyond my Wildest Dreams.”I participated in one of Harris’s more recent death defying exploits when I joined him on a rattlesnake hunt along the banks of Pine Creek in Tioga County two seasons back. Roe, agency executive director. “To maintain this valued customer service, however, we provide hunters with a certificate at the check station when their bear is processed, and information about how and when they can find the age data, which is determined by examining a tooth from the bear that is extracted as part of the check station processing, on our website.”Ages are available only for bears from which a tooth was pulled. to access the data and learn the age of their bear, a hunter will need to have their legal seal number from the check station certificate.
