where the wild west comes alive

Oliver Yantis

(1869 - November 29, 1892)

Born in Kentucky, Oliver Yantis was a cotton farmer near Orlando, Oklahoma.

Yantis became a member of Bill Doolin's gang by request of Bitter Creek Newcomb. It was rumored that Newcomb had a thing for Yantis' sister.

Oliver was with the Doolin-Dalton gang when they robbed a train in Caney, Oklahoma on October 14, 1892 and a bank in Spearville, Kansas on November 1, 1892.

Oliver Yantis was shot by lawmen at his sisters’ ranch south of Orlando, Oklahoma.

He is buried in the Rose Lawn Cemetery south of Mulhall, Oklahoma.

An email from Bill Cooper brings the following news:

The May 3, 1999 tornado that hit the cemetery resulted in the Yantis stone being broken into two pieces. In July 2001 the Western Outlaw & Lawman History Association (WOLA) voted to pay for the repair of the gravestone. This repair was recently completed by Mr. Max Warren of the Warren Monument Company in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The 5 foot tall stone, made from cast concrete, now stands complete once again thanks to the efforts of a number of Old West History buffs.

I have constructed a crude map which will help you locate Oliver Yantis's grave. Click on the Oliver Yantis link below.
