WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Gets Australian Peace Prize

WikiLeaks‘ founder Julian Assange, who enraged Washington by publishing thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, was given an Australian Peace Award on Tuesday for “exceptional courage in pursuit of human rights.”

Assange was awarded the Sydney Peace Foundation’s gold medal in London, only the fourth to be handed out in its 14-year history. The not-for-profit organization associated with the University of Sydney, is supported by the City of Sydney.

Assange, an Australian former computer hacker who is fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden over alleged sex crimes, was praised for “challenging centuries old practices of government secrecy and by championing people’s right to know.”

“we think the struggle for peace with justice inevitably involves conflict, inevitably involves controversy,” the foundation’s director Professor Stuart Rees said.

“we think that you and WikiLeaks have brought about what we think is a watershed in journalism and in freedom of information and potentially in politics.”

Mr Assange, who was named as the award recipient in February, welcomed the prize. “The real value of this award, and the Sydney Peace Foundation, is that it makes explicit the link between peace and justice,” he said in a statement.

“It does not take the safe, feel-good option of shunning controversy by uttering platitudes. instead it goes into difficult terrain by identifying organisations and individuals who are directly engaged in struggles of one kind or another,” he added.

Although the Peace Prize is awarded annually by the foundation only three other people in its 14-year history have been awarded the gold award for courage in pursuit of human rights – the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Japanese Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda.

Assange criticized the Australian government, saying it must stop shoring up Washington’s efforts to “behave like a totalitarian state,” and said it was “appalled by the violent behavior by major politicians in the United States.”

WikiLeaks caused a media and diplomatic uproar late last year when it began to publish its cache of more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables, revealing secrets such as that Saudi leaders had urged U.S. military action against Iran. Some American politicians said WikiLeaks should be defined as an international terrorist organization.

Bradley Manning, the US Army private accused of giving information to WikiLeaks, remains in jail awaiting trial on about two dozen charges, including aiding the enemy.

Julian Assange himself claimed publication of the cables helped shape uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East and said WikiLeaks was on the side of justice.

Yesterday’s arrest of Julian Assange and the escalating harassment of his organization, Wikileaks, has proven many things, among them, the power of information, and how nasty things can get for those whose business it is to pry the lid off closely-guarded secrets.

While pundits, commentators, bloggers and the Internet as a whole debate the efficacy of the latest Wikileaks bombshell, Cablegate, one thing can be certain, Legacy Media benefits tremendously from the document dumps, while the journalists of the future have already sprinted ahead.

Wikileaks will not change journalism. instead the fracases over Cablegate demonstrates how the economics of journalism have already changed the business of reporting, and the resultant product. If the 251,000 documents being released were originally pilfered as early as May of 2010 by Army private, Bradley Manning, as is suspected it is somewhat laughable that a group of distributed volunteers could keep such a juicy secret bottled up and away from the professional press for so long.

Organizations like Wikileaks, or groups with a similar agenda will have a role to play in the future of journalism, regardless of what happens to Wikileaks founder Assange, who is now in British custody, awaiting extradition to Sweden. However the future of journalism belongs to those who can use social media, devices like the iPad, location technologies and a suite of tools that make storytelling more rich, more communal and more locally relevant, while simultaneously empowering millions to join the conversation. That is the future of journalism, and the aim of the documentary and website of The Future Journalism Project is to capture the transformation that is underway. The future of journalism is being shaped by the convergence of tools and tales, both the medium of expression, what is now possible to express thanks to technologies that are becoming ubiquitous.

aside from a few clever infographics and word clouds, little has been done with the information from the cables which demonstrate the power of new media story telling tools. (The term ‘new media’ is somewhat of a misnomer, as many of the tools and techniques are not new, but there are many mashups of existing technologies, as well as new tools that are being created every day that bring with them tremendous potential to change how stories are told and consumed)

One way in which sensitive topics are today dealt with is through the use of Xtra Normal, a video engine that allows cartoony avatars to conduct a dialog selected by the user. The robotic voices of the avatars and their jerky movements lend a sense of parody to otherwise verboten topics. Examples abound, such as ‘Black Marriage Negotiations,’ which turned a critical eye to the double standards successful African American men must face when the topic of marriage arises with similarly ambitious African American women. just prior to the midterm elections, ‘Hi, I’m a Tea-Partier’ surfaced, which was another Xtra Normal video that depicted a level-headed conversation between a Tea Bagger and a skeptic, who questions the ethos and aims of the Tea Party. At each turn, the Tea Bagger answers with de rigeur talking points from Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and others that are both nonsensical and contradictory. Cornered on the substance of his/her arguments, the Tea Bagger responds with an ad hominem attack on President Barack Obama and the Democrats, calling them both socialists and fascists.

Our political discourse is conducted in shrill tones, and with the most sensational, provocative and dishonest purveyor of misinformation ruling the day. It is exactly because Xtra Normal is so matter of fact that viewers can listen to arguments side-by-side, and evaluate them on their substance, somewhat devoid of context and free from emotion.

Below is a short Xtra Normal clip I compiled this morning dealing with one of the first Wikileaks cables, wherein the U.S. State Department, ordered detailed surveillance of UN diplomats in a document signed off by ‘Clinton,’ who one must imagine is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The Future Journalism Project is about more than the tabloidization of diplomacy, however. It was created with the mission to be a “Web-based video series [that] will explore the present state, current disruption and future possibilities of American journalism from a variety of perspectives.” In short the result will be a documentary film following, among other things, the transformation of the journalistic profession and the media through the advent and adoption of new technologies.

Anyone counting on the iPad to be a messiah device, or the savior of the media will surely be disappointed, but the tablet computer in its current form points to an exciting road ahead, in spite of it’s limitations. The initial draft of this post was written using iA Writer, and while the native WordPress app leaves a lot to be desired, in theory it enables mobile blogging, ditto Tumblr. For free apps–which still require engineering resources to code, they’ll do for now, and demonstrate how much potential there is out there.

One of the key areas of change is he increasing use of video. Video is engaging, utilizes both sight and sound, and it is easy to share. furthermore, as a growing percentage of the workforce spends its days at a desk, in front of a computer screen, Web video is one more way in which we interact with other humans, even if they are two-dimensional strangers.

Location-based services are another evolving technology with the power to change journalism and storytelling. Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, Facebook Places and Yelp! checkins are examples of location technologies that allow users to broadcast their whereabouts to social contacts, but also bring with them the possibility that one day advertisers will be able to serve relevant discounts based on proximity, and news organizations can do the same with news, or possibly involve citizen journalists in breaking events. while the vast majority of today’s smart phones are GPS-enabled, the possibilities have barely been explored.

Social media, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, YouTube and others, are both evolving the conversation, and changing the form it takes. PBS demonstrated how social media can be used to harness the power of crowds when Thanksgiving flyers were asked to tweet how long it took to get through airport security, using the hash tag #TSAtime. Compiling and displaying the results with the aid of Storify, reports poured in from America’s 52 busiest airports that expected opt-out protests of full body scanners did not materialize, and that on the whole, security screenings were quick and painless.

While the discomfort of commercial and humiliation of commercial aviation has little to do with the mendacity of the world’s government leaders, it is a far more immediate and actionable concern to the avergage citizen than the contents of the State Department cables. furthermore, had opt-out protests materialized, it would have demonstrated in unequivocal fashion how social media tools, and the power of suggestion can have a real and profound impact offline. There is little that can be done with the information released at Cablegate.Wikileaks.Org through social media, except to share disappointment, shock or indignation–less so now that access is being limited.

Therefore, The Future Journalism Project is an attempt to look at the changing nature of our media, and the technologies that are disrupting old business models and opening up exciting new possibilities for storytellers.

In the Bay Are are many of the technologists whose tools will usher in transformation that is already underway, while on the East Coast, specially in new York City, are the media owners and content rat ors who will harness and recombine these tools to tell stories in increasingly-sophisticated, comprehensive formats that engage and activate communities both online and offline.

Indeed, the future of journalism does not belong to Julian Assange, nor does Wikileaks hold the pen, with or without its leader. The future of journalism, the media and storytelling as we know it is being constructed by star technologists in Silicon Valley and San Francisco as well as brilliant content creators in new York City. furthermore, the future of the media is held in hand that cradles a telephone, because increasingly, each person is becoming a content creator and contributing to the larger story that is our collective future.

Julian Assange: What really happened in Sweden « DavidKramer.DK

A picture of the events that lead to Julian Assange’s arrest is emerging. we can now attempt to answer the question everyone is asking: What did really happen in Sweden during Assange’s visit in Sweden in Summer of this year? is the CIA behind it all? What does it mean, when Michael Moore says “Sweden is a heaven for rapists”? And why do some claim that Sweden is paradise for false rape accusations?

We do know now, that two women accuse Assange of rape. The definition that the allegation is based on may be alienating, because the legal definition of rape in Sweden is not identical with what most of us would think of when we hear rape. most of us would think that intercourse took place, that one of the involved individuals did not consent and that some kind of threat or violence took place. In the case against Assange no threat took place and the sex happened with consent.

Under Swedish law, a rape has occurred if someone has threatened another person with sex or forced someone to have sex. “Threat” does not necessarily mean violence, in fact, it may be enough if the “victim” felt under threat. It becomes instantly clear that this is a very vague definition since “feeling threatened” is a highly subjective circumstance. This subjectivity is what the case against Assange is mostly based on.

What happened in brief:

- Assange had repeatedly consenting sex with the two Swedish women, and slept at their place for several days.

- Assange has been accused of removing or ripping a the condom in use, by women A.

- Assange has been accused of having sex with women W while she was sleeping.

- after the alleged rape, women A threw a party for Assange.

- after the alleged rape, women W had breakfast with Assange, took him to the trainstation and bought him a ticket for his train.

- Women A added that Assange riped her clothes of at one occasion and they began to have sex. she claims that she did not want to let it happen, but that “it was too late to stop him [Assange]“. Apparently she did not try to stop him either.

- The Swedish prosecutor shelved the case in August 2010 because she said there simply was no case, especially not for rape. three months later another prosecutor, from a different district than where the accusation was raised, opens the case again.

After the “incidence” the two women happened to talk with each other. Women W was worried that she had contracted a disease from the unprotected sex. Women A was shocked to learn that she was not the only women that Assange had sex with while in Sweden. one can imagine that they raged about the fact. one can imagine that they felt betrayed. one can also imagine that they felt anger, embarrassment and jealousy. one can imagine that they felt the need for revenge.

The two women conspired in order to force Assange to take a test for sexual transmittable diseases. right here one wonders how weired that thought is, since it would be useless for Women W to know if Assange has any disease, it is obviously of more use to her to test herself. However, the women went to the police station in order to inquire what could be done to force Assange into testing. one cannot help but wonder if this was thought to cause great inconvenience for Assange rather than to help women W.

In this context it is interesting to note that women A had a blog entry visible to the world where she gives advice how to take revenge. she advices that the revenge should have something to do with sex when a lover disappoints you. The “revenge-blog” entry has been changed lately. instead of the “7 steps to a successful revenge” [A] it now reads “forgiveness is almost always better than revenge“. Why the sudden change of heart?

There is an interesting blog in Swedish that deals with the things the women wrote on twitter and her blog that had later been erased [0]. they were probably erased because they seriously call women A’s version of the events into question.

It was women A who advised women W to go to the police. The two women went together and learned from the police officer that Assange would be forced to be tested for STDs if a rape had occurred. The two women then apparently reported Assange for abuse which caused the prosecution to open a case against Julian Assange.

A matter of definition

Now the problems with that accusation are several. one: Apparently no detectable threat has occurred other than an alleged subjectively perceived threat. Two: The two women seem to have become convinced only afterwards that foul play had occurred. three: His word stands against each individual women’s word, no witnesses were present. Four: Women A originally only escorted women W to the police for support, suddenly though she “remembered” that Assange had “abused” her too.

A recent article in the Swedish press that seems to have decided to side with the women’s story, says: “when the woman [A] tried to stop Assange [from having sex] without explicitly saying ‘No’, he did not care about it” [1]. I had to read this sentence several times in disbelieve. Apparently here it is being claimed that Assange is careless because he did not react to something that never has been expressed. Pause for a moment and think about this gem of a logical argument…

This is pretty much the logic behind it: “had I said ‘no’ he would not have respected it, hence what he did with me is rape”. If you think that this way of thinking does not make too much sense it may be, because it doesn’t. However, this is not an exception but rather a frequent occurrence in Swedish “rape” cases. I do not want to belittle the severity and disgusting nature of a rape, however, what has happened in Sweden lately is that the definition of the term “rape” has been broadened so much that it has almost lost all its meaning.

Recently an EU-report stated that Sweden is the number one country when it comes to reported rape. A debate article in the Swedish newspaper SvD explains: “In an international context the Swedish definition for rape is extremely broad and furthermore, it is constantly widening”[2]. In fact, the definition has been broadened so much already that Michael Moore feels compelled to note something that I can only hope he meant ironically, that Sweden is a heaven for rapists. Sweden probably has no more real rapes than any other nation. However, there are plenty of reported rapes that would not be considered rape in other countries. Additionally, there is a fair amount of wrongly reported men in Sweden.

The Swedish sensitivity for the topic and the well developed automatism to believe a women rather than a man has lead to plenty false accusations. Feminist logic dictates that one must believe a women and cannot question her report. after all, why would a women report a man wrongly? here is a thought: maybe for the reason that she can make his life miserable in an instance, and something will definetely “stick” even if he is cleared from the accusation?

Of cause, if it is true that Assange has initiated intercourse with women A while she was sleeping, he strictly speaking did not have her consent at that very moment. However, it would have to be determined if legally speaking her consent from the evening before and the days previous had extended to this morning. Why did women A not tell him to stop, one wonders? The same goes without saying for women W. If she did not want to continue sex when the condom ripped or was removed (she seems not to know which, maybe the condom slipped, but she apparently prefers to imply intention on the part of Assange) why did she not tell him so?

A problem for Assange comes from a recent development in Sweden, where some demand that the definition for rape is further broadened. that would entail that before every sexual intercourse consent has to be given, also in a long-term relationship [3]. Additionally, if a rape allegation is being raised the accused would have to provide evidence that he had consent. obviously this would only be possible if one takes written consent from their sexual partners prior to every single intercourse. one can imagine vividly what that would mean for the sexual relationships of people.

For Assange this argument means that the initiation of sex with someone who is sleeping is a rape unless he has evidence that the consent given by women A has been given permanently until further notice and not on a case to case basis. Alternatively, if she had previously given her consent for occasionally being woken using sex. To me this way of thinking is completely unworldly and nonsensical.

When following the discussion in Sweden it frequently appears as though sex merely is a weapon to be used. maybe in Sweden there is too much of the old feministic thinking from the 70s that every intercourse involving a penis automatically is a rape. For sure, any further broadening of the definition of the term “rape”, and in fact about every second intercourse is legally speaking a rape. In a healthy relationship one of course assumes permanent consent unless stated otherwise. let us not forget: they call it making love after all.

This does naturally not mean that one can do whatever with a partner. However, both partners are responsible to set boundaries, usually using language, gestures or any other form of clear and unambiguous communication. Women A and women W apparently failed to communicate their dissent, or maybe they only forgot. Apparently, they fortunately remembered when talking to the police.

In fact, the logic applied her, as to what a rape is, resembles the classical “Post hoc ergo propter hoc” fallacy, where the result of an action is mistaken for the reason of an action. Following this twisted logic, it would mean that if a women regrets what has happened in her bedroom after she has had consenting sex with a person, she is free to attribute this feeling of discomfort to the other person, which makes that person at the least an abuser, maybe even a rapist. Legally this certainly is somewhat fishy, to say the least.

If one considers the facts available, it is of course evident that it is impossible to determine what really has happened in the bedrooms (in one case the last row of a movie theater) of these women. Quite likely it was not rape in accordance to any sane definition. Therefore, one cannot help but wonder about the motives behind the report by the women. Revenge as motive is the most likely possibility.

P.S. If the accusations are established as false, Assange would have to finance the court case for renunciation against the two women himself, while a case based on the accusation of rape is financed by the Swedish state. Blaming someone for rape is apparently easy for women in feministic Sweden, getting justice is hard for the falsely accused man.

UPDATE: as DN reports, Assange remains free for now, but indeed, in the beginning of February he may be extradited to Sweden. we will see if Sweden will extradite him to the US in turn- which would be scandalous.

As a recent court ruling came out, Assange has been extradited to Sweden. However, he says he will try to appeal.

Sydney Peace Medal awarded to WikiLeaks founder

According to the foundation, the award was given to recognise the need for greater transparency and accountability for governments.

“by challenging centuries-old practices of government secrecy and by championing people’s right to know, WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have created the potential for a new order in journalism and in the free flow of information,” said Prof Stuart Rees, director of the Sydney Peace Foundation and founding director of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney.

“Instead of demonising an Australian citizen who has broken no law, the Australian Government must stop shoring up Washington’s efforts to behave like a totalitarian state.

“The treatment of alleged whistleblower Bradley Manning confirms a US administration at odds with their commitment to universal human rights and intent on militaristic bullying,” he said, referring to the intelligence analyst with the US Army in Baghdad who was detained for allegedly giving classified data to WikiLeaks.

Assange, born in Australia, founded WikiLeaks and has since drawn massive controversy globally for leaking cables from US diplomats and the US military, posting a huge amount of confidential data on the web.

Assange is currently awaiting an appeal in London against his extradition to Sweden on allegations of sexual assault filed by two women last year.
