Ted Williams left rehab because it was ‘phony,’ ‘scripted’

Ted Williams is now an outpatient at a sober house in Los Angeles, and said that job offers are continuing to roll in. But why did the former Columbus, OH, panhandler leave rehab in Texas, where he was convinced to go by none other than TV’s Dr. Phil?

Because, says Williams, the whole thing was nothing but a media circus, and hardly conducive to getting better. The new York Daily News:

“My reason for leaving treatment was because it gave me a sense of it being scripted. I was doing live telephone call-ins with Dr. Phil and my girlfriend and my ex-wife and all my kids,” Ted Williams told 10TV News in Columbus. “It became somewhat of a scripted circus, and a form of anonymity was lost.”

“There are a lot of people in recovery in the voice-over community and Screen Actors Guild, and I’m around a lot of good people,” Williams told the TV station.

“This is truly a second chance, and I’m going to make the best of it. That’s the best I can say.”

Williams took some time to travel back to Columbus, where he talked with 10TV. and while he feels that Dr. Phil’s remedy was too scripted and didn’t provide enough privacy, he’s evidently not completely averse to that. A Columbus-based promoter, Al Battle, said that he is helping Williams negotiate book, movie and reality show deals in Los Angeles.

As for exactly where Williams is, he said on The Early Show that he’s in “a sober house in Los Angeles for members of the voiceover community.” seriously? There’s such a place populated only by voiceover actors? Ay carumba. D’oh!
